Property taxes to jump $9.8 million
Wichita schools boost spending to $622 million
The Wichita School District has published its 2009-2010 budget and, in spite of repeated reports of looming budget cuts, it shows a $59.5 million increase in net expenditures, a 10.6 percent increase over last year's actual spending.
The increase breaks down as a $25.5 million increase in capital outlay and bond costs, a 50.7 percent increase, and $34 million more in operating costs, a 6.6 percent increase.
The budget, published as a legal notice on page 4A of Thursday's Wichita Eagle, does show a $19.1 million cut in the district's general fund, the largest and most flexible portion of the budget, but other budget line additions overwhelm that reduction.
The budget also shows a $9.8million, 7.3 percent, increase in property taxes levied by the district.
