But former Sebelius aide says without Parkinson at the top of the ticket, Kansas Dems will be 'in a world of hurt'
Parkinson says he will 'not run for Governor'
Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson on Friday put an end to rampant speculation that he would attempt to seek the state’s top office in two years.
“After much thought, I have made the decision not to run for Governor or any other political position in 2010,” Parkinson said in a statement.
Parkinson, a former chair of the Kansas Republican Party, jumped ship two years ago to run on a ticket with Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius when she sought a second term.
He said he was proud of the administration’s accomplishments.
“We’ve tripled the amount of wind power in the state, landed the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility, and are now working to balance the state budget during a very challenging period. The Governor has made all of this possible and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Parkinson said he was making the announcement early to allow another Democratic candidate for Governor to prepare a campaign.
“I’m making this announcement now for two reasons. First, I’m getting asked often what I am going to do and I want to let everyone know. Second, any Democratic Party candidate who intends to run for Governor in 2010 needs substantial time to prepare.”
Parkinson’s departure muddies the political landscape in Kansas. There has been little speculation about other potential Democratic candidates for Governor, as most speculation had centered on Parkinson.
Burdett Loomis, a political science professor at the University of Kansas and a former communications director for Gov. Sebelius, told Kansas Liberty in December that without Parkinson at the top of the ticket as the next election season looms, the Democratic Party would be “in a world of hurt.”
