Says his role will change if he wins Sedgwick County Commission post
Election victory for Peterjohn would be a loss for Kansas Taxpayers
Karl Peterjohn, the face and voice of the Kansas Taxpayers Network since 1993, may have to redefine his relationship with the group if he’s elected to a position on the Sedgwick County Commission in November.
Peterjohn easily defeated a four-term incumbent, Tom Winters, during a Republican primary Aug. 5 and now will face Goddard Mayor Marcey Gregory, a Democrat, in the November general election. Peterjohn will be campaigning in a district in which more Republicans are registered than Democrats or Independents.
He is the third challenger to knock off a county commission incumbent since that body voted in 2006 to raise property taxes.
Peterjohn was somewhat reluctant to speculate about his future with KTN because he doesn’t want to give the appearance he’s overlooking his general election opponent.
“She’s run for office before, she knows how the game’s played, and she has strong union support, so, it’s a different race [than against Winters] but it’s still a race,” he said.
But if Peterjohn is successful in his election bid, he said his role with the taxpayer advocacy group would be affected.
“The county commission position is a full-time job, and obviously we would have to re-examine my role with KTN,” he said. “We’ve got time to work that out before the election.”
Peterjohn remains committed to the cause KTN represents and says with or without him he believed the organization would continue to be a force in public policy in Kansas.
“It will continue in one form or another,” he said.
